What is a 3D Mammogram?
To a patient, a 3D mammogram is the same as a 2D mammogram. The imaging
system moves in an arc over the breast, taking many different images.
This process adds only a few additional seconds to the overall exam, but
provides significant additional information to the radiologist interpreting the exam.
The added value of a 3D mammogram is that it reduces or removes overlapping
tissue, particularly in a woman with dense breast tissue on mammogram.
On a 2D mammogram, overlapping tissue can mask a suspicious finding. On
a 3D mammogram, the overlap is reduced or removed and this improves the
ability of radiologists to detect breast cancer and reduces number of
times a woman may be called back for additional imaging.
Who Benefits from 3D Mammogram?
Any woman can benefit from the additional detail from 3D imaging but most
especially women with dense breast tissue or risk factors, like a family
history of breast cancer.
3D Mammogram Cost
For women over the age of 40, most insurance plans cover a yearly mammogram.
If you choose to add 3D imaging to your regular screening, the fee will
be an additional $95. Some, but not all, insurance plans will cover this
additional fee.
