Neurosurgery
Our neurosurgeons provide specialized care for spine, brain, and vascular
diagnoses either as a result of trauma or degenerative processes. In fact,
our excellent neurosurgery and spine programs earned Winchester Medical
Center a spot on
Becker's Healthcare list of Top 100 Hospitals (2018). Here are some of the complex neurosurgical services Valley Health offers:
Spine
We provide total spine care through standard and minimally invasive approaches.
All of our neurosurgeons are trained in new minimally invasive techniques
including the extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF), which offers spinal
surgery without a back incision. Spine services include treatment for:
- Cervical and lumbar stenosis
- Disc herniations and disc replacement
- Spine trauma and stabilization
- Spine and spinal cord tumors
- Congenital spinal disorders in adults

Brain Tumor
We provide compassionate surgical services for patients diagnosed with
primary and metastatic brain tumors. Using intraoperative brain mapping
techniques we are able to remove brain tumors in the safest manner possible.
Otherwise “inoperable” tumors in difficult areas of the brain
can be removed safely with an “awake” craniotomy. Our neuroscience
team and radiation oncologists are currently creating a radiosurgery program
that will offer minimally invasive surgeries for many types of brain tumors.
Surgeries available include:
- Gliomas and glioblastoma
- Meningiomas
- Metastatic tumors
- Pituitary Tumors

Functional
We can offer surgical solutions for a number of neurological symptoms that
originate within the brain. Our neuroscience team has recently established
a comprehensive Epilepsy Program and Deep Brain Stimulation Program. When
medical therapies fail, we can provide surgical options to patients with:
- Intractable epilepsy
- Parkinson's disease
- Essential tremor
- Trigeminal Neuralgia
- Hemi-facial Spasm
Nerve
We offer expert care for a number of problems affecting the nerves after
they exit from the spine. Compressive neuropathies are often treated surgically
on an outpatient basis. Peripheral nerve services include:
- Carpal Tunnel Release
- Ulnar Nerve Release or Transposition
- Peroneal Neuropathy
- Peripheral Nerve Tumors
Pain
Chronic pain can often be managed with medications. When medical management
is ineffectual, patients may benefit from minor surgical procedures performed
by our pain anesthesiologists. Innovative surgical options include:
- Spinal Cord Stimulators
- Intrathecal Pumps
- Dorsal Root Entry Zone procedure
- Cordotomy for cancer pain
- Motor Cortex Stimulation
Trauma
Winchester Medical Center is a Level II Trauma Center, which means that
our physicians are on call 24/7 to provide critical care and surgical
services for traumatic brain and spine injuries. We have a dedicated neurological
ICU staffed with nurses trained in critical care for neurological patient.
Trauma services provided include:
- Intracranial Pressure Monitoring
- Burr Holes for Evacuation of Subdural Hematoma
- Craniotomy for Evacuation of Hemorrhage
- Decompressive Hemicraniectomy
- Spinal Decompression and Stabilization
