Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation
Valley Health offers medically supervised exercise programs to help individuals
with heart or lung disease rebuild their strength and stamina. Cardiopulmonary
fitness has proven physical and psychological benefits, including a lower
risk of new events or complications, greater independence and improved
quality of life.
A physician referral is necessary in order to participate in any cardiac
& pulmonary rehabilitation program. Most major medical plans cover
the cost of these services. Candidates for cardiac and pulmonary rehab
include patients who have experienced:
Cardiac Rehab
- Heart Attack
- Bypass Surgery / Valve repair or replacement
- Coronary Artery Stenting
- Heart Transplant
- Stable Angina (chest pain)
- Heart Failure
Pulmonary Rehab
- COPD
- Asthma
- Interstitial Lung Disease
- Lung Transplant
- Sarcoidosis
Ask your physician if a cardiopulmonary rehab program may be appropriate
for you. We offer two levels of rehabilitation to meet your needs: the
Monitored/Outpatient Exercise Program and the Maintenance/Wellness Program.
Both levels provide an opportunity to learn about your body’s response
to exercise in a casual, yet supervised, environment.
Monitored Program
The Monitored or Outpatient Exercise Program includes 12 weeks of exercise,
three times a week, on bicycles, treadmills and other equipment. Your
heart rate, ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and glucose levels
are closely monitored and documented by a health care professional specially
trained in exercise therapy and heart and lung functioning.
The Monitored Program also includes special heart and lung education classes
for patients as well as spouses or friends. Cardiac education classes
are held once a week (Winchester) or as scheduled (other Valley Health
locations) on topics such as living with heart disease, medication, nutrition,
exercise and stress management. Pulmonary education classes are also held
once a week (Winchester) or as scheduled (other Valley Health locations).
Participants learn about lung function and explore ways to manage their
lung disease through diet, medication and exercise.
Maintenance/Wellness Program
Once our participants graduate from the program, they transition to exercising
independently, unmonitored. Valley Health’s fitness centers in Winchester,
Front Royal, Woodstock, Luray and Berkeley Springs offer maintenance or
wellness programs to “graduates” who have completed the monitored
exercise program or anyone who has, or may be a risk of developing, cardiovascular
or pulmonary disease. These medically-based fitness programs help individuals
transitioning from or managing a medical condition, needing additional
support, or just to maintain their level of physical activity.
