What is HARP and Why Does it Matter?

              September 12, 2019

Last week, we introduced the first ever Panhandle Health and Wellness Festival being organized by Valley Health in partnership with Blue Ridge Community and Technical College on October 5th!

Leading up to the event, we’ll be sharing weekly updates that provide more details on some of our most popular services that will be made available to festival-goers.

Today’s installment will focus on Valley Health’s Heart Attack Risk Program, or HARP.

              _______________

Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer in America? According to the American College of Cardiology, it was responsible for 840,768 deaths in 2016 alone. However, unlike most diseases, cardiovascular disease is both controllable and preventable, making early screenings crucial. The key to long-lasting heart health is proper education and awareness of what to do to reduce risks. Your first step towards this goal is a HARP screening.

HARP screenings provide invaluable assessment for those who want to find out where they stand on a number of modifiable risk factors as they relate to their heart health. They will be provided, free of charge, at the Panhandle Health & Wellness Festival.

Valley Health professionals will provide the screening and help attendees to identify their risk factors, as well as how to live a healthier lifestyle before a true emergency occurs. With minor, consistent lifestyle changes, you can significantly reduce your risk of developing heart problems!

Screenings are free, and you can get your results right away!

If you’re interested in this service, participants are required to fast for 12-hours prior to testing. Appointments are preferred during the festivals so call 540-536-3050 before the festival to make yours

Walk-ins are also accepted. Each appointment lasts about 20 minutes.

The screening will provide insight into the following components of your overall cardiovascular health:

              • Triglycerides
              • Total Cholesterol
              • Blood Sugar
              • HDL Cholesterol
              • Non-HLD Cholesterol
              • LDL Cholesterol
              • TC/HDL Ratio
              • Bilateral Blood Pressures
              • Weight/BMI/Waist Circumference

A confidential counseling session with a registered nurse will also be provided upon receiving your results towards the overall goal of providing participants with the personal health information they need to make healthy choices. Recommended changes may include incorporating more exercise into their daily life, or joining one of Valley Health’s free smoking cessation programs. All to lead you to a happier, healthier life!

The festivities are taking place on October 5th, 2019 from 8am-12pm at Blue Ridge’s main campus (13650 Apple Harvest Drive, Martinsburg, WV), and will be offering many other free health screenings and discounted lab work. There will also be healthy snacks and activities to be enjoyed by all ages!

Be sure to keep watching the Valley Health blog and Facebook page for Festival updates and to learn more about select services and activities at the event!
