Individuals struggling with obesity and related illnesses may now benefit
from expanded surgical offerings from the
Valley Health Metabolic and Bariatric Program. Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery is now being performed at
Winchester Medical Center (WMC) with robotic assistance for the first time in the region.
Fellowship-trained metabolic and bariatric surgeon
Rodolfo Oviedo, MD, FACS, FASMBS, who joined the program earlier this year, is excited to expand the treatment
options for patients suffering from obesity and obesity-associated diseases.
“Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery can be life-changing for many individuals
who have struggled with weight and diseases related to obesity, including
type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and others,” Dr. Oviedo
says. “Robotic assistance represents the latest advancement in Metabolic
and Bariatric Surgery, and we are excited to be the first to offer it
in this region.”
“Anyone who is a good candidate for minimally invasive surgery is
also a good candidate for robotic-assisted surgery,” explains Dr.
Oviedo. “Robotic-assisted surgery is advanced laparoscopy, offering
all of the advantages of the standard approach with the added benefit
of using instruments that move as the human hand moves, allowing the surgeon
to control four mechanical arms at the same time and also have superior
optics during the operation. Using the surgical robot offers additional
precision, speed, and optimal healing.”
“Obesity is a complex disease, and its effective treatment must be
implemented through a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach,” says
Troy M. Glembot, MD, MBA, CPE, FACS, FASMBS, bariatric surgeon and Medical Director of the Valley Health Metabolic
and Bariatric Program. “Since we opened our program in 2006, thousands
of people have changed their health and their lives for the better with
the help of our dedicated staff. We are thrilled to have Dr. Oviedo join
our team and bring his vast expertise in the area of robotic-assisted
bariatric surgery.”
